Digital Game Theory

Graduates of the Digital Game Theory programme will gain practical skills in digital game development, including graphics, coding, sound design and game marketing. They will learn to critically evaluate digital games, design game mechanics and narratives and implement them in games. This knowledge will enable them to work as game designers, game development specialists, game testers, game marketers, and organizers of e-sports and gaming events. Graduates can be employed in game studios, media companies and marketing agencies focused on digital games.

Typical job roles:

• Game Development Specialist (Graphic Designer, Coder, Sound Designer): Creates the visual and audio components of games, programs game mechanics, and ensures that the game runs technically smoothly.
• Game Designer: Designs game mechanics, rules, and systems to ensure that the game is fun and engaging.
• Level Designer: Creates individual levels of the game, including the placement of game elements and difficulty, to ensure that players experience the optimal gaming experience.
• Digital Game Tester: Tests games at different stages of development, identifies bugs and suggests improvements based on the gameplay experience.
• Game Marketer: Develops marketing strategies to promote games, identifies target markets and ensures the game reaches the widest possible audience.
• E-Sports Event Organizer: Plans and manages e-sports tournaments and events, coordinating teams, players and spectators to ensure the event runs smoothly.
• Game Journalist/Reviewer: Writes reviews, articles and analysis on digital games, provides ratings and recommendations to the gaming community.
• Independent Game Developer: Develops and publishes their own games, often working in small teams or independently, and is responsible for all aspects of game development.

The ideal applicant for the Digital Game Theory degree programme should meet most of the following:

• Is a digital game enthusiast and has a deep interest in the game industry and all aspects of game development;
• has a creative and analytical mindset - can generate original ideas and critically evaluate game mechanics and content;
• Has technical skills - has a basic understanding of programming, graphic design or sound design;
• can express and communicate well - effectively present and defend ideas to the team and wider audience;
• Is a team player - works effectively with others on projects and game development;
• has organisational skills - can plan and manage events and projects effectively; can prioritise tasks and can delegate;
• understands the cultural and social context of games - has an understanding of the historical development of games and their impact on society.

Applicants take two tests, which are held at the Faculty's premises in Trnava. The first test focuses on general overview and professional knowledge, the secondis a test in a foreign language (English or German). Candidates for the Digital Game Theory programme will also undergo an oral interview.

IMPORTANT: Full-time applicants to the Digital Game Theory programme all take the entrance examination, regardless of the average grade obtained at secondary school.

• Length of study: 3 years (B.Sc.) + 2 years (M.Sc.)
• Degree upon graduation: Bachelor (B.Sc.), Master (M.Sc.)
• Form of study: full-time, part-time
• Language of instruction: Slovak

After successful completion of the Bachelor's degree, students continue on to the Master's degree.

Students who have studied a bachelor's degree in a related field at another university must take the entrance examinations to the extent of the bachelor's state examination in Mass Media Studies.

Students of the UCM FMK who have studied a Bachelor's degree in a study programme other than Digital Game Theory must also take the entrance examination. An exception is made for graduates of the Bachelor's degree programme in Media Relations, who are exempt from the entrance exam.

External study is ideal for those working or who prefer a more flexible schedule. Classes are held every other Saturday, allowing students to combine their studies with work or family obligations.

There is a fee for external study. The tuition fee for 1 academic year is 800 €.
