The Department of Media Education at FMK UCM contributes to the development of the study programs Applied Media Studies (Bc., Mgr.) and Media and Information Competences (PhD). The department's scientific research and publication activities cover topics such as media and information literacy, critical thinking, digital media, data journalism, disinformation research, and the use of artificial intelligence in education.
The department coordinates the publication of the international scientific journal Media Literacy and Academic Research, indexed in the Web of Science database. The journal deals with current issues of media and information literacy, media education, and digital media.
Members of the department are active in international scientific societies and participated in the preparation of the Concept of Media Education in the Slovak Republic. They have conducted numerous researches on the media literacy of various population groups in Slovakia and analyzed the implementation of media education in primary and secondary schools.
Since 2016, the department has been collaborating with the European Audiovisual Observatory in Strasbourg on the preparation of comparative studies of the media environment in Europe. It has also participated in research focused on the implementation of European media legislation in EU conditions and analyzed the new Slovak Media Services Act.
The department participates in the Central European Digital Media Observatory (CEDMO) project, focusing on detecting disinformation and increasing media and digital literacy. It also participated in the Horizon 2020 project, which dealt with current trends in the European media environment, and the Erasmus+ project "Needs of CriticAl Thinking", focusing on critical thinking in the context of disinformation and online communication.
