Applied Media Studies

As a graduate of Applied Media Studies at the Bachelor's degree level, you will be able to navigate the system of media functioning and its impact on people and society. This degree programme will teach you how to analyse, think creatively and critically and solve problems in the field of media and communication. You will have the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of digital communication, social media and information management in a variety of formats and forms. In addition, we will teach you how to combat misinformation and fake news, design and lead communication strategies, and how to create content for various digital platforms.

Typical job roles:

• Media Analyst: Analyzes media, identifies trends and creates reports on media content and its impact.
• Fact-checker: Verifies the veracity of information and exposes misinformation, helping to ensure accurate reporting to the public.
• Information and Media Content Management Specialist: Manages and organizes information and media content for effective use.
• Creator of campaigns against misinformation: Designs and implements campaigns against fake news, extremism and hybrid threats.
• Digital Content Creation Specialist: Creates and manages content for websites and social media.
• Teaches critical thinking and media literacy through workshops and courses.
• Data Visualization Specialist: Transforms data into charts and infographics for easier understanding.
• Media and Information Project Manager: Coordinates and manages projects to develop media and information competencies.

The ideal candidate for the Applied Media Studies program should:

• Have a strong interest in media and communication, should be passionate about the study of media and its impact on society;
• be able to analyse critically, should have the ability to evaluate media content, detect misinformation and analyse its impact;
• be creative and innovative, should demonstrate creativity in the development of media campaigns and content;
• have technical skills, proficiency in graphic and multimedia tools for creating digital content;
• Communicate and present well, with the ability to communicate effectively, present information and work as part of a team;
• understand ethics and laws in the media; have a basic understanding of media law and ethical issues in communication.

Applicants to the full-time Applied Media Studies and Media Relations programmes will be admitted without an entrance examination on the basis of a qualitative ranking and until the guideline number has been reached.

After successful completion of the Bachelor's degree, students continue on to the Master's degree.

Students who have studied a bachelor's degree in a related field at another university must take the entrance examinations to the extent of the bachelor's state examination in Mass Media Studies.

Students of the UCM FMK who have studied a Bachelor's degree in a study programme other than Applied Media Studies must also pass the entrance examination. An exception is made for graduates of the Bachelor's degree programme in Media Relations, who are exempt from the entrance examination.

External study is ideal for those who are working or who prefer a more flexible schedule. Classes are held every other Saturday, allowing students to combine their studies with work or family obligations.

There is a fee for external study. The tuition fee for 1 academic year is 800 €.
