FMK UCM lecturer Jozef Sedlák receives Slovak Photography Personality Award

The expert jury recognized his long-standing contribution to artistic photography, historical research, and teaching, through which he has significantly shaped the contemporary photography scene in Slovakia.

Yesterday, the Central European House of Photography in Bratislava hosted the Slovak Photography Personality Awards ceremony. The winner was Jozef Sedlák, a Slovak photographer, historian, curator, and publicist working at the Department of Art Communication at FMK UCM in Trnava. The expert jury highlighted several of his significant works.

Sedlák studied artistic photography at the Film Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He earned his associate professor title in the field of fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. His professional background also shapes the concept of the Studio of Communication in the Medium of Photography, which he leads at FMK UCM.

In addition to his teaching activities, he is also involved in artistic and exhibition activities. The main themes of his work are documentary and artistically manipulated photography. In the 1980s, he documented the lives of people who had been marginalized by the regime. These included communities of nuns and people with mental and other disabilities, according to the Teraz.sk portal.

"His collection about the military draft, Odvody (1987), was extraordinary, as were his staged cycles and conceptual collections, which are always based on pure photography – this is also evident in his experimental cycle Latentné obrazy (2011) and his latest collection of visual essays from Roma settlements, Farba viery (The Color of Faith, 2023-2025)," said the award organizers.

Sedlák's works are included in several public and private collections at home and abroad. "He is the only one in our country who, in addition to his artistic work, is also involved in historical research. He is the author of exceptional publications on photography in Bratislava in the interwar period and a monograph on Béla Petrik," said the organizers.

The title of Photographer of the Year 2025 was awarded to Lenka L. Lukačovičová, a graduate of the Department of Photography and New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. The winners were selected by a jury composed of representatives of the Association of Slovak Professional Photographers, the Central European House of Photography/OZ FOTOFO, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (VŠVU), and the OFF Bratislava festival.
